What does the name CEREC mean?

CEREC is an abbreviation for Chairside Economic Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic.

How is a CEREC filling made?

CEREC is product of CAD/CAM technology. A picture is taken of the prepared tooth and fed into the computer. A computer model is generated and the filling is designed on the computer model. This information is transmitted to a milling machine that cuts the filling out of a solid block of ceramic.

When is a CEREC filling indicated?

A CEREC filling is recommended when a moderate to large filling is indicated.

Why recommend a CEREC filling over an ordinary white filling?

CEREC fillings are stronger than ordinary white fillings. Because they are made outside the mouth by a computer, there is more control over the size and shape of the filling.

What is the cost of a CEREC filling?

A CEREC filling is approximately twice the cost of a white filling, but only half the expense of a crown.

Will a CEREC filling replace the need for a crown?

In most instances the CEREC filling will restore the tooth without the need for a crown.

How does a CEREC filling differ from a crown?

A CEREC filling is more conservative than a crown and leaves more of the original tooth structure in place.

Will my insurance cover CEREC fillings?

CEREC fillings fall under the insurance category of inlays or onlays and these restorations are usually covered at the same rate as crowns.
